Just weeks after competing in both the TD Beach to Beacon 10k and the Falmouth Road Race, Ethiopian runner Dejene Berhanu committed suicide on Sunday, August 29, 2010. Berhanu was only 29 years old when he took his own life last weekend. He was buried on Monday and left behind his wife, Ayelech Berhanu--also a professional runner--and a three year old daughter.

Gebremariam and Yimer make it an Ethiopian sweep in 2010 Falmouth Road Race results

August 17, 2010 | Examiner.com

Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia outsprints Wilson Kwambai Chebet of Kenya to win Falmouth in 32:20.A fast field lined up for the 2010 CIGNA Falmouth Road Race on Sunday, August 15, but Ethiopians Gebre Gebremariam and Wude Ayalew Yimer finished first in the elite results. Gebremariam and Yimer both beat a slew of Kenyans in contention for the win, with Gebremariam going 32:20 for the close win over Wilson Chebet in 32:21 and Yimer running 35:46 over second place finisher Lineth Chepkurui in 35:50.

The 38th annual Falmouth Road Race saw a filled-to-capacity field of 10,000 take on the challenging 7 mile course along New England's cape. The 2010 Falmouth Road Race was a refreshing change of pace, with runners on the starting line greeted by In and out clouds and temperatures in the mid 60s with low humidity.

After winning the Beach to Beacon 10k last weekend, Gebre Gebremariam continued to take the New England road racing scene by storm with a sprint to the finish win over Wilson Chebet during his Falmouth debut. With top contender and NYC Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi of America pulling out of Falmouth last minute citing tender hamstrings, Gebremariam took advantage and took the race in a historically slow, yet tactical 32:20.

A squad of six Kenyans finished in the top ten today, but Ed Moran of Virginia managed to break up the powerful pack and run 32:40 for fifth place, serving as the top American. Antonio Vega of Minnesota and Sean Quigley of Pennsylvania finished eighth and ninth, respectively running 32:53 and 32:58. Moran's performance is especially impressive given that he finished fourth in last night's Falmouth Invitational Mile (4:02.03). Ben True of Yarmouth, ME was the first local finisher with his 33:23, 13th place result.

Over 5,500 elites and locals alike ran the 13th annual Beach to Beacon 10k on August 7 along the coast of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Absolutely perfect racing weather met the runners on the starting line (54 degrees with 29% humidity) and fast times shortly followed. A slew of  international elites came to race for the overall win for 6.2-miles starting at Crescent Beach and ending at Portland Head Light, while awards were also given for the top local Maine finishers.

On the men's side, the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country champion Gebre Gebremariam won in a sprint to the finish and became the very first Ethiopian to win the Beach to Beacon 10k.
