Ethiopia to send team to Qatar despite diplomatic strain

Defending world indoor champions- Meseret Defar (women's 3000m), The Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) has announced that it will send a team to the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha in March despite strained diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Qatar.

Speaking by telephone from Addis Ababa, EAF treasurer Amanuel Abraham said the federation will send a team to Doha as it as an obligation to compete. "The Doha competition is organized not by Qatar government but by IAAF," he said. "As a member of the association, we have an obligation of taking part. So Ethiopia will take part."

Ethiopia's Yemane Tsegay, who won the Lake Biwa marathon on SundayOTSU, Japan — Yemane Tsegay of Ethiopia won the Lake Biwa marathon on Sunday after running the final third through the rain way ahead of the pursuing runners.

The 24-year-old moved up the pace at around the 24 kilometre (15 mile) point to shuffle the nine-men front pack.

Gebrselassie set for Manchester 10km race

Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie,LONDON — Ethiopian distance great Haile Gebrselassie will chase a third victory in the Great Manchester Run after confirming Wednesday his entry for the 10 kilometre race on May 16.

Gebrselassie came close to bettering the world record for the distance, currently held by Kenya's Micah Kogo in a time of 27 minutes and one second, in 2009 after surging to the front at the halfway point in 13:31.

Unheralded Azmeraw Bekele takes a surprise victory at the Ethiopian World XC trialsAddis Ababa, Ethiopia - World championships 10,000m silver and reigning World Cross Country bronze medallist Meselech Melkamu and unheralded Azmeraw Bekele were the winners of the senior women’s and men’s races at the 27th Jan Meda International Cross Country- Ethiopian trials for the world cross country championships- at the Jan Meda race course in northern Addis Ababa on Sunday (21).

In the junior ranks, Afera Gedefe grabbed a shock victory in the women’s race, while Berhanu Delele was a comfortable winner of the corresponding men’s race.

Ethiopia's Robel Teklemariam competes in the Men's 15K Classical Cross Country race at the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Pragelato Plan, Italy, in this Feb. 17, 2006VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- When Robel Teklemariam is asked if he has a nickname back home in Ethiopia, the Olympic men's cross-country skier - yes, you read that right - notes that there's no word for "snow" in his native language.

So Teklemariam goes by "Beredoe Shartate," which is loosely translated to mean "Ice Slider," a name that might be as curious as the athlete's presence at the Vancouver Games.

Merga will be challenged in the men’s field by Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot of Kenya, the runner-up last year, who has won four times and holds the course record. Kosgei will face Dire Tune of Ethiopia, whom she edged by a second last year in the women’s race.

Mo Farah set to face Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele

Mo Farah is ready to take on legendary Ethiopian Kenenisa BekeleEuropean 3,000 metres indoor champion Mo Farah will race Ethiopia's three-time Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele in Birmingham on 20 February.

He set the British record last year in a time of seven minutes 34.47 seconds.

Farah, 26, will be aiming for a similar display in next Saturday's Aviva Grand Prix at the National Indoor Arena.

"Bekele is always mentioned as the man to beat, and it's great to pit myself against him with the hope being I can give him a good challenge," he said.

No snow but Ethiopia's ski hope is on a roll

Robel TeklemariamADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia's only Olympic skier wheels down a suburban Addis Ababa street on his roller skis, expertly weaving around six donkeys and drawing stares from locals more used to watching runners train.

Robel Teklemariam went to the Turin Winter Olympics four years ago and came 84th out of about 100 cross-country skiers. Now the man whose dreadlocks and bright outfits drew stares in Italy has qualified for the Winter Games again.

"If I'm closer to the winner than I was at the last Olympics then I'll be very happy," Robel said, sweating in the blazing sun after the workout.

Dibaba eyes record at Boston Indoor Games

Double 2008 Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba of EthiopiaBOSTON — Double 2008 Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia has her sights set on reclaiming the indoor 5,000m world record at the Boston Indoor Games on Saturday.

Dibaba captured Beijing Olympic gold in the women's 5,000 and 10,000 meters after taking third at the 2004 Athens Olympics and she has captured eight world titles in cross country and track from 2003 through 2008.

Dibaba missed the 2009 World Championships at Berlin due to a foot injury but is back on form after setting a 15-kilometer road race world mark in November of last year.

Gobena tops Osaka marathon field

OSAKA (Kyodo) Ethiopia's Amane Gobena chopped over a minute off her personal best time to win the Osaka International Women's Marathon on Sunday.

Gobena pulled away from Portugal's Marisa Barros just after the 38-km mark and never looked back, crossing the finish line at a rain-soaked Nagai Stadium in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 14 seconds for victory on her Osaka debut.
