Bereket Simon and Addisu Legesse will not seek re-election

Deputy Prime Minister Addisu LegesseBereket Simon, Addisu Legesse and Tefera Walwa will not seek re-election

Time is up for another heavyweight from the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).

Addisu Legesse, Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Chairman of the ruling front, will not run in the upcoming election. Last week, Capital reported that Bereket Simon, Minister at the Office of Government Communication Affairs; Tefera Walwa, Minister of Capacity Building; and Tsegaye Berhe, President of Tigray Regional State, will also not seek re-election.

The prime minister of Ethiopia has stepped into the row between Sir Bob Geldof and the BBC which has claimed that 95 per cent of the $100m aid raised, by Live Aid and others, to fight famine in rebel-held northern Ethiopia in 1985 was diverted to be spent on weapons.

Ethiopians honour victims of Mengistu purge

Ethiopian soldiers wave during previous celebrations marking the fall of Marxist dictator, Mengistu Haile MariamEthiopia inaugurated a museum on Sunday in memory of the victims of former dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam's so-called Red Terror purge which killed tens of thousands in the 1970s.

Dozens of family members and government officials attended a sombre ceremony at the memorial in Addis Ababa to remember their loved ones, whose bodies were mostly dumped in mass graves.

The museum took three years to complete and honours the dead with photographs of the 1977-78 campaign of state terror carried out under the orders of Mengistu to wipe out his opponents.

Bob Geldof: Live Aid money did not pay for weapons

Bob Geldof has denied a new report claiming that millions of pounds were siphoned from the 1985 Live Aid concerts to purchase weapons for Ethiopian rebel groups. "It just didn't happen," Geldof insisted, despite accepting that "some money" may have been "mislaid".

US urges free and fair Ethiopian polls

ADDIS ABABA — The United States on Friday urged Ethiopia to ensure its parliamentary elections set for May are free and fair.

Opposition groups have accused Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's ruling party of repeated harassment in the run-up to the May 23 polls.

Bob Geldof rages at BBC over claim Live Aid millions were used to buy arms

LIVE AIDBob Geldof reacted angrily yesterday to claims broadcast on the BBC that millions of dollars raised by Band Aid were diverted to Ethiopian rebels.

The allegations that 95 per cent of aid money donated to help victims of the 1985 Ethiopian famine were siphoned off were made in a BBC radio programme broadcast yesterday.

Geldof told The Times that “it would be a f***ing tragedy” if the British people stopped giving to charity because of allegations made by the same broadcaster that inspired him to fight poverty and hunger in Africa.

1.18 Million Ethiopian Voters registered In Addis Ababa City

Addis Ababa , (ENA) About 1.18 million eligible voters were registered in Addis Ababa City until last Wednesday, the Metropolitan Electoral Office said.

Office Head, Getahun Gebre-medhin told ENA on Friday that the number of political parties registered to compete in the forthcoming national elections has reached 18.

7 Ethiopian political parties sign agreement to make upcoming elections peaceful

Ethiopian Election 2010Bahir Dar, (ENA)  Seven political parties contesting in Bahirdar Town and West Gojjam Zone of Amhara regional state have signed joint agreement to make the upcoming election peaceful, democratic and credible.

The parties signed the agreement in Bahirdar Town on Monday in the presence of religious leaders, elders and party observers.

NEBE prepares code of conduct for int’l election observers

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) said it has prepared code of conduct and working procedures for international election observers.

 NEBE Chairperson Prof. Merga Bekana said the directive implicitly states the legitimacy of the election would be approved by the rule of law and the people of the country.

Meles called upon society to complement efforts in making national elections credible, free, fair, democratic

Prime Minister, Meles ZenawiMekele, Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi called upon the society to actively participate in the upcoming national elections to be conducted in May 2010.

Speaking at the awarding ceremony of outstanding farmers held in Mekele town of the Tigray State, Meles said on Sunday national elections are indicators of the sovereignty of the public in a given country.
