The Naples neurologist with Physicians Regional Medical Group and president of the World Federation of Neurology travels thousands of miles from home to help others.
Finkel traveled to Ethiopia in May to provide 28 sets of donated medical assessment Tool Kits to Ethiopian neurologists.
Partly supported by a grant from the Naples Council on World Affairs, local neurological groups and national donations, the medical assessment Tool Kits are supplied to African neurologists on an ongoing basis as aid to improve neurological care worldwide.
"It is extremely gratifying to be able to help my colleagues in neurology obtain these necessary tools for examinations," Finkel says.
To date, the World Neurology Foundation has sent 128 Tool Kits to Africa, with the largest source of contribution to this project coming from colleagues at Neuroscience and Spine Associates, Collier Neurologic Specialists and humanitarian-oriented people in Naples.
The neurological community of Florida and the Naples Council on World Affairs have been most generous in supporting this project, Finkel says.
"With only one neurologist per 2 million people in Africa, it is essential that the patients have the opportunity for a proper clinical examination," he says.
In addition to the Tool Kit donations, Finkel presented the Inaugural Dean's Lecture at the Black Lion Hospital of Addis Ababa University during his stay.
For 36 years, Finkel has been involved in state, local, national and international neurological organizations.
He's been recognized internationally for his work as president of the World Neurology Foundation, a U.S. not-for-profit foundation that works with the World Federation of Neurology to improve neurological care worldwide.
As a board-certified neurologist, Finkel has a full-time practice in Naples with Physicians Regional Medical Group.
While having a special interest in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, difficult headaches in women and restless leg syndrome, Finkel sees patients on a daily basis with general neurological disorders.
