Addis Ababa,The government has announced that it would stop importing cement as of February 7, 2010, the Ministry of Works and Urban Development said.
Land and Housing Development Bureau Head with the Ministry , Amare Assegdom said in a news conference he gave here on Friday that the import of cement would be suspended as of the stated period as there is adequate supply of the product in the country
The price of cement has been stabilized and while local production supply can meet the demand of cement in the country, he said, adding there is no need to import from abroad.
Over 500,000 quintals and 1.5 million quintals of cement was imported every month from abroad in 2001 and 2002 EC respectively In 2001 EC alone, a total of 12 million quintals cement was imported from abroad.
