Ethiopia : Farmers develop over 265,000 ha. land through irrigation

Irrigation in Amhara Regional State Bahir Dar, More than 265,000 hectares land has been developed through irrigation in Amhara Regional State since last October, regional agriculture and rural development bureau said.

Public relations department head with the bureau, Shiferaw Tesfaye told ENA that 70 million quintals output is expected to be harvested from the area of land developed through irrigation.

Shiferaw said the area so far cultivated is part of the plan to develop over 900,000 hectares land through irrigation in the dry season of the current Ethiopian year.

The head said 380,000 quintals fertilizers and select seeds is being distributed among over two million farmers engaged in the irrigation development.

More than 1.3 million farmers had secured 38 million quintals output from 347,000 hectares land developed through irrigation last year, he said.
